Does your district offer any cyber school opportunitites for students that no longer attend regular classes at your school?
IU 16
Millville offers a Digital Learning Academy using Lincoln Interactive. This is an alternative to other cyber schools that is saving the district some money. Currently we have 10 students enrolled in grades 7-12. Students are still Millville students and can participate in extra-curricular activities as well as in school classes/activities. They also may graduate along with the rest of their classmates as long as the graduation requirements are met. These students are still required to come to school to take the mandatory state tests. One teacher is the Instructional Supervisor for the program. This is one of the positions that I hold in the district. I check on the students ona weekly basis to see that they are completing their assignments and maintaining acceptable grades. I don't teach anything, I just check to make sure they understand how to submit their assignments and show them where to go when they have specific questions regarding the content.
We also have some elementary students who are using the same program with their enrichment teacher to complete language courses.
Drawbacks: students must be highly motivated to work to complete the required number of assignments every week, it is difficult to meet IEP requierements for students who are not in the building (like progress monitoring), some students try it for a month and end up returning to school because it was too difficult (in the mean time several thousand dollars were spent to accomodate this learning experiment)
Feel free to contact me if you would like more information on how it works for our students killiak@millville.k12.pa.us
